Need some input
OK I don't know squat about Eging gear. (I caught a squid on a pillie once, but it didn't look like an eg!) Pam is obviously set up, with the Emeraldas combo. I'm right with reels, although the first question is why do you use double handle reels? We've got a couple of Certates, an Exist Hyper and some bigger ones I use for Barra etc. I'm not sure what rod I should be using. I'm not backward in buying another rod, I'm sure Dunc and Janelle won't knock back more money, but I'd like to get away with what I've got for a while. There is a Steez Power Junkie, that I'm guessing may be a bit heavy, and a Megabass Jade Python and Silver Shadow bridge butt. These are all about the same weight. The only other decent long rods I have are lighter. There's an Egrell S1 and a Megabass Kirisame Mobile Shaft. Are these too light? Also, what breaking strain line to you guys use. Most of the threadlines have Fireline between 4 and 10 pound on them although the Branzinos have Super PE in 20 and 30. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Dale,
IMO forget the heavy rods, go the S1 if you want to use what you have for a while. You should use a 2000 size reel purely for balance, don't worry too much about finesse drag spools etc, just don't tighten them up with pliers, hahaha! Line wise, 6-8lb braid, and leader wise 8-12lb flouro will be perfect. Now in saying all that this combo is ideally suitable for the lighter stuff, 1.8-2.5 Egi's. Anything larger in Egi size and I would start looking at the Jade Python or the Silver Shadow.
Cheers

Re: Need some input
I'm with them-S1 or kirisame.
I was using an S2 before I got my first egi rod,and that did the job just fine till I broke it..
The double handle is for balance. When retrieveing slack line after jigging, you can spin the handle to pick up the line fast with a big effort and the rod doesn't wobble in the hand as much as a single handle combo. So you may feel any taps on the egi easier with the whole combo balanced and "still" with the double..Thats the theory anyway!!
Line selection is a personal thing, but I use 0.8 PE to 8lb FC leader then onto a snap for easy egi change.
"I'm not backward in buying another rod, I'm sure Dunc and Janelle won't knock back more money, but I'd like to get away with what I've got for a while."
I can certainly vouch for that!!

Re: Need some input
Pam wanted to visit Janelle on Saturday so we snuck down to the local tacklo. I'm pretty keen on one of the Emeraldas rods. I'd be able to get multiple use out of it. I behaved and didn't buy it yet, but I guess it'll be my next investment. Still putting some aside fo another PNG trip in October so I'm trying to be good.

Hahahaha, don't be shy Dale, you know you want one of those Ema rods, bloody beautiful things they are! So are you considering a guided version or interline?

Hey Dale
Welcome to the site. As you have prob seen Shane has his hands on the BC Emma, and I have a 8'1 spin interline emma. They are both very very nice rods. Your more then welcome to try my interline if we get the chance to catch up for a eging session.
Cheers

Interline for a couple of reasons. I've got a telescopic Interline Hearland Ryuron BC that is great in the Kayak. Folds up nice and short. The 4 pc Interline Ema would be very handy for the same reason. Pam has the earlier Interline Ema and it casts like nothing I've seen. We also do a fair bit of travelling so the shorter length would be handy.
Re: Need some input
I luv both of those interline models, especially the Ryuron! The Ema telescopic is such a good idea for such a long rod, my only gripe is the action of the rod as I prefer it to be softer for squiding. If it was softer I would have got into fistacuffs with Janelle for the first one they had
