Gaffs
Hey guys, I'm thinking of buying a Autoking gaff. I don't know what size would be best. Thinking of a 5m. Does anyone have an opinion on which size suits best? I mainly fish Redcliffe, Manly and Viccy pt, all land based. Thanks

Andrew,
I think for the difference in price and minimal extra weight most guys will go the 5mtr over the 3mtr. Ask Les (Codrea) about them, pretty sure he has the 5mtr.

Hi Shane, you are right Les has a 5m gaff I think, just wanted to get another opinion of maybe pros or cons. Also I have seen a Graphiteleader brand at either 3.9 or 4.8m. These have a thread so a net or gaff can be screwed in.

Re: Gaffs
Those autoking gaffs are very nice and very nice to use from using other members gaffs. Also talk to Alan as well as Les because Alan has both the 3000 (3 metre) and 5000 (5 metre). I'm not sure about size but it does seem as Shane says alot of people prefer the 5 metre. I don't have the money to buy an auto king so i was looking at this.

It looks ok and if it has a problem i can send it back because it has a 1 year warranty. Even though it doesn't have the same quality as the autoking it looks pretty good. Just making an alternative decision for members who don't have the money or budget for the autoking and would like a gaff for squid.

Hey Kaspar, I saw those Click gaffs as well. The only concern I have with them is that there are alot of segments to them and I think they will jam up or be easily damaged. If you get one I would like to see it

Re: Gaffs
Andrew,
It's not a gaff and doesn't fold away but it only cost me $20. It's a blackfish net made by Wilsons. It's around 3mtrs long from memory, because it's so cheap I don't mind where I lay it down, you just can't hang it off your belt. It's made of Aluminium so it's not going to rust out either. TW at Camp Hill have them.

Re: Gaffs
I thought the same thing Andrew but it has a warrenty and i don't think it will jam that easy compared to the telescopic rods because telescopic gaps don't have that carbon to carbon connection inside the telescopic gaff compared to the rods which have carbon to carbon connection because you want the rod to lock in slightly at the sections.
Paul how would you make the net? would you just make a ring out of aluminium and atttach it to the broken end of the telescopic pole then make your own net mesh for the aluminium ring?

Re: Gaffs
Have owned autoking, clicks and prox. Autoking by far has the smoothest action. The clicks I have is the 3.3m one and is perfect for manly and close work. My prox one has a net attachment and it's about 4.5m I can get the gaff attachment but for that length I find a net is easier.
Re: Gaffs
I have both the 3 and 5 metre auto kings and if I could only have one I'd go for the 5 as the 3 is no good on the jetties, both really nice gaffs though.

Yeah the 3's are just that bit short and don't reach the water on the jetties, great small rock wall gaff though.

Re: Gaffs
yah, Robfish came to my rescue, the5m was perfect length for woody point, he had it in the water in seconds, and all the extra barbs the autokings have as opposed to some of the cheaper 4 barb brands were perfect, hooked the squid in a second and hauled him up no worries.
