Attatching egi to leader?
Currently I am using these Owner swivel snaps for easy change overs and plus they seem super strong.
What else is out there that you are using..
Good and bad, like to hear what you have or are using??

Re: Attatching egi to leader?
Personally I don't like to use clip swivels for any lure as I feel it can impede the action of the lure. I always use a loop knot to attach my jigs/lures.

Re: Attatching egi to leader?
Hi Alan,
Same for me too.Any other style of fishing I use a perfection loop as the lure connection.
But with eging I have found I can change egi's many times in a matter of minutes, therefore I have switched to using clips.
Some of the shallow water work I do involves casting as far as I can in shallow-1 to 2 ft of water-with a 2.5 egi and retreiving in a walk the dog style manner, then switching straight away to an 1.8 super shallow jig to work the area.
Kind of "teaser" technique that has worked in the past.
Was finding that I was missing alot of squid that had been teased up into the shallows whilst trying to re tie on the shallow water jig.
Sure,I could have just recast the 2.5 to them, but the shallow 1.8 with it's slow sinking design really seems to do the trick!
Nothing comes close though to a loop knot connection though for lure movement,I totally agree.
Just one little compromise I had to make.

Re: Attatching egi to leader?
Hi Mick,
I fish similar to you, long cast's over shallow water to bring squid in from out wide then switch to a smaller jig etc..
I agree its crucial to get the smaller jig in their face asap so this is why I take 2 or 3 out fits all pre-rigged and ready to go, I know this may not be practical for a lot of people so a small clip or clip swivel is probably the best way to go for a quick lure change.
At the end of the day a tiny little clip isn't going to impede the action of a squid jig very much if at all, I just prefer a loop, we are the ones who give the jig its action anyway by working our rods in certain ways and varying retrieve speed.
Cheers,
Al

Re: Attatching egi to leader?
I remember seeing that you were a builder for Strudwick!!
Totally agree mate,at present I only have one dedicated rod.
That is definately changing in the coming weeks though.
Would be good to see some of your rods and a breakdown on each when you can Alan.
Cheers mate.

Re: Attatching egi to leader?
This is what I use, still a clip but you dont have to unclip anything. Just hook the jig on and around til its in.
Re: Attatching egi to leader?
Yeah Mick I used to build strudwick rods years ago and before that I built loomis rods. I'll put some pics up of my rods one of these days, they are nothing flash, I just had some prototype blanks lying around that I thought would be Ideal for squid fishing so I slapped them together and they work a treat.
Since I joined this site I have been toying with the Idea of finding some nice blank's that would suit eging and building up some custom eging rods to sell. If I decide to go down this path I will put up a thread to ask for input from the members as to what their ideal eging rod would look like, what action you'd prefer, grip configeration etc.. and I'd take every one's ideas into consideration when designing a custom rod for "Aussie" eging. I'll keep you posted.
Hon-su, they look like the go to me, they look nice and lite yet strong, if I was to use anything other than a loop I'd probably go with something like those.
Cheers,
Al

mmmmmm breaden snaps hehehhe didnt get any when i was os but will be sure to get some to try.
i currently am using the daiwa emeraldas snaps (dirt cheap for a 30pack in hk) and Im loving them. Also have some decoy egg snaps. I run from size 00-1 for all brands (they are roughly the same size). I actually have a very nifty little case for storing them and ill upload some pics when i get the time.

Re: Attatching egi to leader?
there should be available locally. Anyone who sell Breaden jigs, can get hold of them.
I didnt like the Decoys egg snaps as they go soft after a while. Tried the Owners but still go soft. The Breaden ones is my fav so far as I dont have to unclip a tiny ass hook. If only they come in bigger size. Im using small atm.

Re: Attatching egi to leader?
I've been using the Evergreen snaps and they have been reliable so far.

Re: Attatching egi to leader?
I use similar clips to Hon-su's.
Again, cheap as chips from HK, can't remember the brand.
But the Breaden ones seem better/smaller profile.
I've used the lure snaps that I use for breaming as well.

Haha, everyone who's seen me use them ask the same.
I've never had any trouble with them.
Never opened up on the breams/jacks/trevs that I've caught (usu. < 40 cm).
A 60+ flattie couldn't open it up either.
I doubt squid will.

oh cool. they look pretty good.
Re: Attatching egi to leader?
Yeah, I'm trying to get my hands on more... many more.
I bought 7 packets sometime ago.
Down to my last 10 clips.
I'd hate to start tying knots again everytime I want to change lure.

Re: Attatching egi to leader?
hmm.....they do look good Ray.
Might have to pester Jeryl for some!!
I wonder if it could handle 4-6kg fish on 4kg gear?

Re: Attatching egi to leader?
The circle clips were from Japan,
troutisland.com via bass-planet.jp (whom used to do overseas sales).
Both are sister shops of tackleisland.co.jp, egi.jp, proshop-moon.com, etc.
I might have to try with another vendor soon.
I'll also try to load one up to know how much it can hold.
It's something I don't mind knowing either.

Thank you for the tip Hon-su,I now have two packets of these clips and they certainly look good.
Egi swapping has just become alot faster
Re: Attatching egi to leader?
Ive been using them on 10-14cm stickbaits for tailor and salmon. They seem to be holding up so far....
Re: Attatching egi to leader?
I also use the breaden ones personally, we have tested them out on a Tiagra and they hold a lot more than 7kg! I think these ones are the best for eging as they are very quick and easy to change lures.

If you want the extra reassurance you can go the jepsa cross lock snaps, they are really really small and very hard to undo.

Re: Attatching egi to leader?
I recently went over to the darkside and started using clips and have found them to be great. I have been using the Decoy brand in size 00, I think next time I will go for size 0 as the 00 can be a bit fidly to open/close due to there tiny size, specially in the dark, they are good little clips though and cheap to buy.
Those breaden clips look good Peter, I mite have to give some of those a go.
Cheers,
Alan

Re: Attatching egi to leader?
I just like to tie the leader straight on the jig...bugger the loops and clips...not for this little black duck but thats just me because I fish shallow water all the time and I think I have it sussed pretty good now.
