Braid, mono or fluro

This is a continuation on the topic of braid, fluro + mono

I use 0.8 PE to leader of between 8lb-15lb. Having an interline has forced to to use a slim beauty knot and I normally run a rod lengths worth of fluro with a snap on. This is just the way im comfortable with and everyone has their own opinions.

0.8 PE to 8lb nitlon FC-have never stepped up leader size breaking strain,would prefer to lose egi than lose the sensitivity this lb class leader affords me.

The "fish n fool" knot is a good one for your terminal tackle connection.Think it's episode 7-2010 season.

As for leader to main line,I run an 16 turn wrap( braid up leader,8 turns up then 8 back down)then a 3 wrap blood knot in the FC-moisten then pull the two tags of braid,which closes the FC blood knot and cinch tight.
Awesome knot,tapers nicely so the bulk of the whole knot is at the back,mainline end.Casts beautifully as no messy tags facing forward to grab guides when casting.
It comes on a little piece of paper inside the box when you buy sunline castaway PE...So I guess it's called the "sunline"knot lol.

Hmmm I think I'm running #0.8 PE at the moment.
Usually run 8lb FC leader with a snap at the end also.
Sometimes tie a mid-knot if I can be arsed, otherwise a double uni works also.

I'm running Varivas Suspending braid, 0.8 (12lb) and 8lb FC Rock leader, or if I go up in leader it's 10lb Nitlon DFC. Usually a rod length or a bit less. Never been done over by a squid yet, tho I've been smacked by several Pike, hey Grahame! Lol

Yeh I can't get over that Flathead engulfing my Yama Natural in silver shading. Man it was wedged a the absolute base of its gut, other than a bite off that thing was never going to get unhooked - must have been a good representation of a prawn. Nice and tasty bycatch though.

To digress a bit I "stumbled" on a dual handle spinning reel that uses the exact same principles as an overhead "Lever Drag". Its based on a rear drag system (of which I'm not normally a fan of), but if you transfer the front and rear movement of an overhead lever drag over to a left and right lever movement on the spinner it acts exactly the same. Set the strike and max drag with the rear knob, then use the lever to run from freespool to almost full lockup and anywhere in between at a flick of the thumb. I played with it at the local tackle shop and found it fascinating as I do like Lever Drag. I wanted a 2500 series but were sold out, so I will get a 1000 series and play. Its not quite as light as my Shimano Twin Power but still reasonably light weight at a mere 220 grams.

Pretty cheap for a Shimano with 5 ARB bearings, Dynabalance, Fluid drive, Paladin Gear, Super Stoppa, SR Concept, Propulsion Line management and the usual good top end techo stuff as standard, $105 for the 1000 series, $115 for the 2500 series (on special). Man its silky smooth and infinately adjustable drag is oh so easy to operate with a nice loud drag ratchet sound. Strange bit is I can't find it on the Shimano website?

Bottom line I love my Braid with the feel and reactiveness with super thin diameter and am happy to work with the very few compromises that sometimes need to be made - good knots are the key, and poor abraison resistence the main drawback. Tis the same with mono though, it has good points and bad, loops and so called wind knots happen when using ultra light line and bugger all jig weight with Mono too. But you can waste a lot of mono with bustoffs for the cost of braid is the only advantage I see...

Squid Jig loss is a rarety if the base setup is right - they aren't that expensive anyways. The flurocarbon leader and abraison resistence is the key to salvaging snagged jigs, hence why I use a wind on leader (hmm, 16 foot of strong flurocarbon leader I can grab "if" needed) the jig prongs straighten pretty easy and way less than 6 pound on a straight pull imo but my FC leader is well above that. Mangrove roots are tough as they flex a lot.

I think my passion for super light gear comes from chasing the big blue nose bream at the Tweed River. They don't get that big by being dumb and seeing 15 pound mono stuck to a 4 ball sinker planted on the bottom LOL. Its a rare ocasion that I put any lead on for bream fishin at all when serious - a 000 ball is sometimes needed (my norm is 4 pound line, direct to hook - Vanish Flurocarbon throughout) LOL. Oh yeh I can lose a full box of 2/0 hook in a night as I pla the rugged country where I know the big buggers are hoveribg - all part of the fun. I use 2/0 so I don't catch the tiddlers.

I know a place we should go one night...plenty big mothers there...I think I told you where that place is....you know ...34 and all over the kilo.

Yuppers thats what I said, horses for courses. I love braid, you hate it - dunno if using braid is actually mumbo jumbo mate, seems lots on the Egi Club use braid too. Doesn't matter much either way

Sounds good for the fishin Paul. I love my bream fishin. Nah I dunno the location your speaking of.

One day when we are out at Mud Island, I'll show ya a place that fires for big blue nose buggers and lots of - mullet strip bait - but they only run for about 2-3 hrs on the right tide, and are in about 1 metre of water. Strangely enough the rest of the day its a waste of time. Oh, its the only location that I spool 15 - 20 pound Flurocarbon line rather than Braid for Bream; and sometimes I feel undergunned with that, yeh it's tough coral turf in very shallow water...

Squid used to enter the circumference of my boat lighting but I never used to fish for them in those days.

HI ROB HERE I HAVE JUST JOINED THE BRISBANE EGI FORUM. BEING NEW TO CATCHING SQUID ,WHERE AND WHAT TIME OF YEAR SHOULD I TRY CATCHING SQUID.? IS IT BEST DAY OR NIGHT AND WHAT TIDES DO YOU RECOMEND?KNOW AT THE MOMENT IT WOULD BE HARD TO CATCH A FEW, BECAUSE OF ALL THE FRESH IN THE SYSTEM. ARE SQUID AVALABLE IN THE BROARD WATER AND THE GOLD COAST AREAS?

the squid are always around but the location moves seasonally winter summer etc thats the skills that come with joining a club such as ours
Mate come along say G'day we're a great liitle club full of nutters (squid wise anyway sorry ned and paul and ...)our comp season is starting very soon and a social round every month is also a happening thing

yes manly and redcliff just happens to be where most of the guys live around but they do fish well. knowing the times to go and the X spot is local knowledge and which egi(lure) to use but they do happily share with the club members
the gold coast fishes well and the bay is full of them if knowing were to look
I'm reaonable new (7yr) to Qld squid but the club members are so approachable and my hit and miss tecnique is no longer that
thats what the club is great for fellow fishermen with the same passion
