What is Eging you ask??

The name Eging is derived from the word EGI which in japanese means "squid jig". Eging is the Japanese form of Squid fishing. This form of squid fishing has been around for many many years, but has only in the last few years become more and more popular in Japan and is now starting to branch out into the world. There is also more and more dedicated gear available for keen anglers.

The Japanese word for squid is ika. I have seen a few fishing programs lately that are misinforming the viewers and saying that egi is the Japanese word for squid, they also mispronounce egi as ee-jee instead of egg-ee.

Aori -ika = Bigfin Reef Squid/Tiger Squid/Northern Calamari (Sepioteuthis lessoniana)
Kensaki - ika = Pencil Squid (Photololigo edulis)

both are highly prized in Japan with large aori fetching well over $20/kg

To get a little more technical, egi has no relation to squid in any way shape or form other than it is used to catch squid, the term egi is a derivative of 2 words, the word 餌 means eghsa or in english Bait. The word 治具 means osami gi which means jig. So the inventor of this product 400 years ago took part of each word and called it EGI. So in short EGI means bait jig and was named by the inventor more than 400 years ago as a lure to catch squid.
